In the heart of Versailles, a majestic testament to the power and grandeur of the French monarchy stands before us: the Ecuries du Roi, puis de la Reine. These grand stables, built between 1679 and 1682 under the orders of Louis XIV, were not merely functional structures but a symbol of the king’s prestige and his love for horses. Imagine the scene. It’s 1683, and ambassadors from Siam are visiting the Ecuries du Roi, puis de la Reine. They marvel at the sheer scale of the buildings, designed to accommodate over 300 horses each. Their eyes widen as they take in the sight of the carefully selected steeds, their coats gleaming, their movements precise and controlled. The ambassadors are left speechless, humbled by the display of royal power. The Ecuries du Roi, puis de la Reine were divided into two parts: the Grande Ecurie and the Petite Ecurie. The Grande Ecurie housed the king’s most prized mounts, including those used for hunting and war. These horses were meticulously trained in the art of dressage, their every move a testament to the skill of the royal equerries. The Petite Ecurie, on the other hand, housed the horses used for everyday tasks and for pulling carriages. Life at the Ecuries du Roi, puis de la Reine was a whirlwind of activity. Over 1,500 people worked within its walls, their lives dedicated to the care and training of the royal horses. Equerries, pages, coachmen, grooms, blacksmiths, saddlers, and a whole host of other skilled professionals ensured the smooth functioning of this vast equine empire. The importance of horses in the French court extended far beyond transportation. Horses were an integral part of royal ceremonies, military parades, and hunting expeditions. The king’s riding skills were seen as a reflection of his ability to govern, and the finest equerries in the land were employed to train the royal family and the young nobles who would one day serve as officers in the king’s army. As we stand here, we can almost hear the echoing hoofbeats of history. The neighing of the horses, the clatter of hooves against cobblestones, the commands of the equerries. The Ecuries du Roi, puis de la Reine were not just stables; they were a microcosm of the French court, a place where power, prestige, and the art of horsemanship were intertwined.
