Gazing upon the Wisent-Denkmal, one might wonder about its journey. This bronze bison, standing proudly in Bremen’s Rhododendronpark, holds a tale woven through time and art. The Wisent-Denkmal was sculpted by Ernst Gorsemann in his Berlin atelier in 1935. Cast by Heinze & Barth, the massive bronze sculpture weighs 1275 kg and stands an impressive 2.30 meters tall. The Wisent-Denkmal began its journey in Berlin. It was prominently displayed in front of the Künstlerhaus in Tiergartenstraße. Gorsemann, appointed a professor at the Nordische Kunsthochschule in Bremen in 1934, brought the sculpture to the city in October 1935. The Wisent-Denkmal then embarked on a tour of significant exhibitions. It graced the courtyard of the Nordische Kunsthochschule, was a centerpiece at the Gau Kulturwoche Weser-Ems in Oldenburg, and even journeyed to Paris. At the 1937 Paris World’s Fair, the Wisent-Denkmal stood majestically in the roof garden of the German Pavilion. This prominent display, earning Gorsemann a gold medal, underscored the Nazi regime’s appreciation for his work. Upon returning to Bremen, the Wisent-Denkmal resided in the courtyard of the Nordische Kunsthochschule. It later stood before the entrance of the “Bremen – Key to the World” exhibition. Finally, in 1940, with funding assistance from the Julius Rohland-Stiftung, the city of Bremen acquired the sculpture. It found its permanent home in the newly established Rhododendronpark, where it continues to captivate visitors today. The Wisent-Denkmal’s presence in the park reflects the era’s fascination with the wisent, a symbol of strength and German heritage. Ironically, while the Nazis celebrated this powerful creature, the real-life wisent was on the brink of extinction. This juxtaposition adds another layer to the story of the Wisent-Denkmal, a silent bronze witness to history’s complexities.
