A crumbling brick wall. A tiny window. This is all that remains of Sveti Duh’s orphanage. But within these stones lies a powerful story. Sveti Duh’s orphanage wasn’t just any orphanage. It was the first of its kind in the Ragusan Republic. Established in 1432 it offered a lifeline to desperate mothers.

Imagine the shame a mother faced abandoning her child. The Dubrovnik City Council recognized this. They decreed the orphanage’s creation. Their words were strong: “It is disgusting and inhuman to throw small human beings around the city as if they were animals.” Sveti Duh’s orphanage was built within the Convent of St. Clare. This clever design allowed mothers to leave their babies secretly. A small entrance with a turning wheel. The wheel swung the baby inside. A bell alerted the nuns.

The anonymity was complete. Mothers wore dark hoods. No questions were asked. Children stayed until age six. Then they were offered for adoption. Sometimes parents returned for their children. Poverty or societal restrictions often led to these heartbreaking separations.

The orphanage continued for centuries. It was even adapted after the devastating 1667 earthquake. Eventually Napoleon’s occupation in 1808 closed it. It was used as an ammunition storehouse then as stables. Today only a bricked doorway and small window remain. Yet the inscription above remains. “My heart was hot within me while I was musing the fire burned”. These words echo the intense emotions of both the mothers and the nuns at Sveti Duh. This small yet significant space in Dubrovnik whispers stories of compassion and sacrifice. The legacy of Sveti Duh remains a testament to the city’s remarkable history. A history of both hardship and unwavering care for its most vulnerable citizens.
