The name Somerton in Victoria, Australia was likely inspired by Somers Town in London, England, though that’s not for sure. It’s thought that the suburb was named after a “Summerton Inn” which existed as early as 1847. The Somerton Post Office first opened on January 1st, 1854 and closed in 1864. It re-opened in 1892. This historic building served the community right here, with mail for the locals. This was a time when rail travel was just taking off, and Somerton Railway Station opened in 1881. Unfortunately, it closed to passengers in 1960. The station is still around, as a crossing loop and a rail yard just a few blocks from us. Today, Somerton is a suburb of Melbourne, predominantly known for its industrial areas but still holding onto a little bit of that old charm.
