Nestled between towering modern buildings, the Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia stands as a testament to Rio de Janeiro’s rich history. Here in the Largo de Santa Rita, its simple facade belies a captivating story. The Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia’s tale begins with a painting. In the early 18th century, Manuel Nascentes Pinto and his wife, Antonia Maria, arrived in Rio with a cherished image of Saint Rita of Cascia. As devotion to the saint grew, they envisioned a dedicated chapel.

The land for Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia was purchased in 1718. The cornerstone was laid a year later. By 1721, the couple had generously donated the main chapel, sacristy, and consistory. They even provided liturgical items. However, their desire for patronage rights sparked a dispute with the diocese. This legal battle continued for years, only resolving when their son, Ignacio, relinquished the claim.

During this time, the family maintained the Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia as a private oratory. The nave was completed in 1728, as proudly etched on its facade. Around 1741, the family fully ceded control of the church. Around this same time, it became a burial ground for recently arrived enslaved people who died before being sold. The original brotherhood dedicated to Santa Rita transformed into the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament of Santa Rita. This happened when the church became the parish church for the then-outskirts of Rio. Its territory encompassed Vila Verde, the hills of São Bento and Conceição, and the Valongo and Gamboa inlets.

Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia officially became a parish in a series of steps. First, it became a parish seat on January 9, 1749. Then, its territory was formally separated from Nossa Senhora da Candelária on January 29, 1751. It was established as a vicariate on May 5, 1753. Finally, its first perpetual parish priest, João Pereira de Araújo e Azevedo, was presented on May 29, 1753. Between 1753 and 1759, the church underwent renovations. The facade, the tower’s spire, and all the interior carvings were redone, embracing the elegant rococo style.

Today, the Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia’s exterior appears relatively modest. A rectangular shape, a single arched doorway, and two upper-story windows topped with segmental arches. A medallion of Saint Rita graces the space above the door, where a decorative frontispiece once existed. The interior, however, reveals its true splendor. A single nave, an elongated main chapel, a sacristy, four side altars, and 17th-century statuary create a captivating space. The vaulted nave ceiling, carved pulpits, azulejo panels, and choir loft add to the church’s artistic richness. Unusual features include an oculus above the transept arch and a skylight in the main chapel’s ceiling. The Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia’s carvings are remarkably well-preserved, a rare example of untouched Baroque-Rococo art. The main altarpiece, partially reused from the original design, still exhibits Baroque elements. Its style influenced other churches in Rio, such as Glória do Outeiro, Lapa dos Mercadores, and Santa Cruz dos Militares. A 20th-century painting depicting Saint Rita’s miracles adorns the main chapel ceiling. The Igreja Santa Rita de Cássia stands as a beautiful fusion of history, artistry, and faith.
