Seven kilometres from Dubrovnik’s ancient walls lies Nova Mokošica. Its story isn’t etched in centuries-old stone but in the concrete and glass of a modern suburb. This wasn’t always so.

Before the high-rises and planned streets Nova Mokošica was a different place. Olive groves vineyards and fields stretched where apartment buildings now stand. It was a quieter extension of the Old Mokošica a place where Dubrovnik’s citizens had summer homes since the 16th century. Imagine the peace the scent of olive blossoms the gentle Adriatic breeze. Wealthy families like the Gozze-Giorgi and the Zuzorić found refuge from the bustling city in this tranquil haven. The Gozze-Giorgi villa even played a significant role. In 1814 the council met there for the last time to attempt to restore the Republic of Ragusa. A poignant moment in history hidden within the quiet suburban landscape.

Then came war. The 1990s brought destruction to this once peaceful area. Nova Mokošica wasn’t spared. The Yugoslav People’s Army occupied both Old and New Mokošica. Bombing continued even after the withdrawal of forces. Nova Mokošica however suffered less damage than Old Mokošica. Some believe this was because guerrilla units were stationed in the older settlement absorbing the brunt of the attacks. The scars of this conflict however still remain visible on some buildings today. They serve as a reminder of a turbulent chapter in Nova Mokošica’s history.

Today Nova Mokošica thrives. It’s a vibrant residential area. A place of multi-storey buildings and smaller urban villas. Schools kindergartens health centres shops and cafes all contribute to the busy life of this modern suburb. It is densely populated and full of life. Nova Mokošica boasts a primary school a sports hall a kindergarten and even a health centre. The convenience of amenities for families is evident. Plans for a new church and a large shopping centre only add to the ongoing development.

It is a testament to resilience. From a tranquil countryside to a war zone to the bustling suburb it is today. Nova Mokošica’s story unfolds in layers. Each building each street each family holds a piece of this complex and fascinating narrative. A story of olive groves and bombshells of peace and war of a quiet past and a modern future. It is part of Dubrovnik’s narrative. A modern extension of a city with ancient roots.
