Established in 1958 the Centro Argentino de Informacion Cientifica y Tecnologica CAICYT stands as a beacon of scientific advancement. It’s a testament to Argentina’s commitment to research and development. Initially a small division within CONICET CAICYT’s journey has been one of evolution. It began as a library and bibliographic information division. Later it transformed into the Centro de Documentacion Cientifica. Finally in 1976 it became the CAICYT we know today.
Located on Saavedra 15 in Buenos Aires the CAICYT has always been at the forefront of innovation. It pioneered advancements in scientific documentation. The CAICYT led the way in adapting technology for information processing and retrieval. Throughout the 1980s CAICYT’s influence on the Argentinian library and documentation world was profound. This center fostered numerous workgroups focusing on terminology formats and database queries.
The CAICYT’s role expanded to embrace scientific publishing. For many years the center offered consultation and continuous training. It played a crucial role in ensuring the quality of scientific and technical publications. The creation of the Nucleo Basico de Revistas Cientificas Argentinas in 1999 was a major milestone. This initiative aimed to build a database of internationally recognized academic publications. It also provided up-to-date tools and standards to boost national journals.
In 2012 CONICET recognized CAICYT’s status as both a service center and a research institution. This formal recognition marked a significant shift. It solidified CAICYT’s position as a vital contributor to Argentina’s scientific community. The CAICYT’s mission and functions were again redefined in 2023. The focus now is on consolidating and professionalizing Argentinian scientific and academic publications. The CAICYT works on establishing quality indexing and classification criteria. It also creates national regional and international standards and guidelines.
The CAICYT also houses the Argentine ISSN Center since 1974. This center is solely responsible for identifying continuous resources published in the country. It assigns ISSN codes registers them in the international ISSN database and promotes their use. The CAICYT also manages SciELO Argentina. SciELO is a network of electronic libraries with full-text scientific journals. Access is open free and unrestricted. It’s a collaborative regional project including countries in Latin America Spain Portugal and South Africa. In Argentina SciELO is part of CONICET’s scientific policies.
The CAICYT’s commitment to knowledge transfer is remarkable. It offers high-level technological services. These include training courses and specialized consultations. The services are available to editorial teams librarians researchers and public and private institutions. The CAICYT also actively supports the dissemination and transfer of knowledge.
