Was it the scent of roasted meat under the peka or the sound of a mandolin that drew you to Osojnik? High in the hills above Dubrovnik, the village of Osojnik seems a world away from the bustling city. Yet, this tranquil village holds a story as dramatic as any played out within Dubrovnik’s famed walls. Osojnik, nestled amongst vineyards and olive groves, is a testament to resilience. The Muhoberac family, who have farmed this land for over 500 years, embody this spirit. Their story, interwoven with Osojnik’s history, offers a poignant glimpse into Croatia’s past and present. In the 1990s, during the Croatian War of Independence, Osojnik was ravaged. Homes, including the Muhoberac’s ancestral dwelling, were destroyed. The family, along with many others, were forced to flee. The scars of this conflict are still visible in the village today, a stark reminder of the turmoil that once gripped this peaceful landscape. But Osojnik, like the Muhoberac family, refused to be broken. With aid from the Swiss government, the village was rebuilt, allowing families like the Muhoberacs to return. Today, Anton and Marja Muhoberac, along with their son Tony and Anton’s mother, welcome visitors to their restored home. They share not only their delicious traditional meals, cooked in the same 250-year-old fireplace used by their ancestors, but also their stories. Imagine the aroma of zelena menestra, a hearty cabbage, potato, and smoked meat stew, filling the air as Anton shares his memories of the war and the village’s rebirth. Picture young Tony, playing the mandolin, keeping the village’s musical traditions alive. The Muhoberacs, along with the 150 members of Osojnik’s cultural society, the KUD, ensure that the village’s heritage thrives. In Osojnik, the past isn’t forgotten, but rather, it fuels the present, creating a vibrant tapestry of tradition and resilience. As you leave Osojnik, the scent of woodsmoke and the sound of music linger, a reminder of the enduring spirit of this remarkable village and the family who call it home.
