A magnificent neoclassical structure greets you. This is the Igreja Metodista Deus é a Solução. Its story begins not here but far away. In 1835 American Pastor Fountain Elliot Pitts arrived in Rio de Janeiro. He started Methodist worship in people’s homes. By 1836 the Methodist Episcopal Church of the Southern USA appointed him permanent pastor. The first official place of worship was in Largo da Glória.

The early years were challenging. Imperial laws made conversion difficult. Financial support from the US was scarce. Worse yet a yellow fever epidemic ravaged the city. Despite these hardships the Methodist faith persisted. In 1870 the Methodist Episcopal Church South decided to restart preaching in Brazil. But true revitalization only happened in 1878. That’s when Pastor John J Ranson arrived. After studying Portuguese in São Paulo he set up in Rio.

He rented a house on Rua do Catete. There he held services. Growth demanded a larger space. In 1881 land was purchased. A chapel was built and opened in September 1882. The current church followed in 1886. The style is predominantly neoclassical with hints of English Gothic.

The church’s opening wasn’t without controversy. Catholics tried to halt construction. Imperial law forbade non-Catholic religions from using buildings with ecclesiastical features. But the Igreja Metodista Deus é a Solução stood firm. Its unique architecture remains a testament to perseverance. It is more than a building. It is a symbol of faith overcoming adversity. A beacon that shines brightly in Rio de Janeiro. A vital part of Brazil’s rich history.
