Kassel’s Vorderer Westen. A neighborhood brimming with life. It wasn’t always this way. Originally known as the Hohenzollern-Viertel, this district west of Kassel’s city center was once a symbol of wealth and conservatism. Imagine, in the late 19th century, the ambitious industrialist Sigmund Aschrott began transforming the fields outside Kassel’s walls. He envisioned a grand residential area. He laid streets, built houses, and planted trees, shaping what we now know as the Vorderer Westen. These Gründerzeit and Jugendstil homes attracted Kassel’s affluent citizens. Their elegant facades reflected the prosperity of the era. The Vorderer Westen became a showcase of their status. Fast forward to the 20th century. The Vorderer Westen largely escaped the devastation of World War II. This made it an attractive location for students of the newly established Kassel University. They brought with them a wave of fresh ideas. Feminist, social, and political movements flourished. This influx transformed the Vorderer Westen into the vibrant and liberal district we see today. The district is bordered by railway lines to the west, north, and northwest. These lines connect Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station to Kassel Hauptbahnhof. The eastern border follows Hardenbergstrasse, Westendstrasse, and Sophienstrasse. The southern boundary is marked by sections of Wilhelmshöher Allee. This grand avenue leads from Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe to Kassel’s city center. The heart of the Vorderer Westen is Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, once known as Hohenzollernstrasse. It was established in 1871 as the main shopping street. Along this bustling thoroughfare, you’ll find Bebelplatz and the Kassel Stadthalle, flanked by the Stadthallengarten and Rosengarten parks. Further north lies the elongated Tannenwäldchen, home to the Kassel-Tannenwäldchen transmitter and the Kassel Youth Hostel. The Vorderer Westen is a testament to its rich architectural history. Numerous Jugendstil, Heimatstil, and Historicism buildings grace the area, particularly around Bebelplatz. These architectural gems survived the bombings that ravaged Kassel during the war. Nestled within the Vorderer Westen are the Aschrottpark, the Bundessozialgericht (Federal Social Court), and the Goetheanlage. The Marie von Boschan-Aschrott retirement home, a prime example of Neues Bauen (New Building) architecture, also stands on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, constructed between 1929 and 1932. Today, the Vorderer Westen is a melting pot of art, culture, and culinary delights. Its streets are lined with unique shops, bars, and cafes. It’s a place where the grandeur of the past meets the dynamism of the present. The “Affenfelsen,” a popular gathering spot, embodies the district’s relaxed atmosphere. Here, you can soak in the urban vibe while savoring the diverse cuisine the Vorderer Westen offers. From pizza to cake to sushi, the culinary options are endless in this gastronomic paradise. The Vorderer Westen is a story of transformation. It’s a neighborhood that has embraced change while preserving its unique charm.
