Cours de Verdun Gensoul. A name etched in Lyon’s history, a testament to a city’s resilience. It’s hard to imagine, looking at this bustling avenue today, that it was once a serene promenade. Cours de Verdun Gensoul, the northwestern section of the larger Cours de Verdun, stretches from Place Gensoul to Place Carnot. This area, with its mix of 19th-century facades and the stark white concrete of the interchange, holds layers of stories. Look around you. Notice the elegant balconies with their intricate ironwork, perched atop stone bases. These buildings, mostly five stories high, stand as witnesses to the changing fortunes of Cours de Verdun. The exception, number 9, with its single grand story above a mezzanine and below a mansard roof, adds a touch of unique charm. Cours de Verdun wasn’t always named for a pivotal World War I battle. It bore several names: Cours Bertin, Cours du Midi, even Cours Napoleon. It was in 1916, amidst the turmoil of war, that it received its current name, honoring the heroic defense of Verdun. The story of Cours de Verdun Gensoul is intertwined with the ambitious plans to expand Lyon’s Presqu’île. Early visions of a grand promenade connecting the Rhône and Saône rivers eventually materialized in the early 19th century. Imagine a tree-lined walkway, a place for leisurely strolls. Yet, its low-lying position made it prone to flooding. The dream of a grand promenade was temporarily halted by plans for an imperial palace. But fate intervened, the palace project was abandoned, and the promenade was revived. By the mid-1800s, Cours de Verdun was a thriving thoroughfare. It was a key stop for stagecoaches traveling between Paris and Marseille. Iconic establishments like Brasserie Georges, opened in 1836, added to the area’s vibrancy. The arrival of the Perrache train station in 1853 dramatically altered the landscape, disrupting the north-south perspective. Hotels sprung up around the station, and a tramway station further encroached on the promenade. But even then, Cours de Verdun retained its charm. Pictures from that era depict a wide avenue adorned with trees and flowerbeds, a beloved spot for exhibitions and gatherings. The 20th century brought new challenges. Parking lots replaced green spaces, and traffic intensified. The construction of the Fourvière tunnel in 1971, intended to alleviate congestion, ironically led to the creation of the Perrache interchange. This massive structure, though functional, further fragmented the once-grand Cours de Verdun. Today, Cours de Verdun Gensoul, along with its other sections, bears the scars of progress. Yet, amidst the traffic and concrete, glimpses of its elegant past remain. The ornate balconies, the varied facades, and the echoes of its former glory whisper stories of a bygone era.
