The streets of West Englewood whisper stories of transformation. This southwest Chicago neighborhood, carved out of swampland and oak savanna, has seen waves of immigrants and industry rise and fall. Once a haven for Swedish and German homesteaders, it blossomed into a bustling hub with railroad lines connecting it to the city center. The first European settlers arrived in the 1840s. West Englewood, at the time, was nothing but swamp and forest. It wasn’t until the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Railway began laying tracks in 1852 that the area started to gain prominence. By the late 1850s, the Rock Island and Wabash Railroads arrived, further bolstering the area’s importance. With the increasing presence of major railroads, the region was christened “Junction Grove” due to its many rail junctions. As railroads continued to crisscross the area, West Englewood grew and became a major transportation hub. Despite its rapid growth, it wasn’t until 1889 that West Englewood was annexed by the City of Chicago. This was a pivotal milestone, further accelerating West Englewood’s pace of development. This neighborhood, like so many others in Chicago, endured its fair share of economic and racial change. While many immigrants found decent jobs in the city’s stockyards, African Americans were often relegated to second-class status. This shifted over time as West Englewood became a hub for Black Americans who were looking to escape segregation and poverty in the South, though the neighborhood itself has unfortunately experienced some of these same issues over the decades. Sadly, the neighborhood’s once-thriving industrial heart eventually faltered, leading to a decline in population and services. Houses and buildings stand empty, a tangible testament to the neighborhood’s struggles. The Chicago Police Department’s 7th district has its headquarters here, a stark reminder of the challenges West Englewood faces today, despite its rich past and resilient spirit.
