Have you ever imagined a neighborhood named after walnuts? Kozyatağı Mahallesi, whose name translates to “Walnut Grove,” was once a tranquil area abundant with walnut trees. This neighborhood, nestled in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul, has a rich history, transforming from a rural landscape to a bustling residential and commercial hub. Kozyatağı Mahallesi sits east of Göztepe, northwest of Bostancı, and south of Ataşehir. It’s easily accessible by the D-100 highway and the M4 metro line. Even the planned M8 metro line will run through here. While landlocked, ferries in nearby Kadıköy and Bostancı are within easy reach. Kozyatağı Mahallesi’s past is a fascinating blend of rural tranquility and urban development. Up until the 1970s, the area was primarily used for agriculture. The clean air and abundant walnut trees were defining features. It remained largely untouched by development. This changed with the opening of the Bosphorus Bridge and the construction of a highway. Kozyatağı Mahallesi became increasingly attractive for residential development. The 1972 Erenköy-Bostancı Zoning and Development Plan further intensified this transformation. High-rise buildings began to appear, a relatively rare sight on Istanbul’s Anatolian side. Today, Kozyatağı Mahallesi is a mix of residential apartments, commercial towers, and plazas. Despite this shift towards urban development, Kozyatağı Mahallesi has managed to retain some of its green spaces. Numerous parks dot the neighborhood. A shopping mall also caters to the residents’ retail needs. The population of Kozyatağı Mahallesi stands at 37,743. It is one of Kadıköy’s most populous neighborhoods. Its history is intertwined with influential figures. Seyyid Pasha built a mansion here in the 1860s. Ahmed Reşid Pasha, the finance minister during the reign of Abdülhamid II, followed suit in 1902. Even Gazi Ethem Pasha, the hero of Dömeke, made Kozyatağı Mahallesi his home. Today, two streets bear his name and the name Dömeke. From a rural neighborhood to a bustling urban center, Kozyatağı Mahallesi has undergone a remarkable transformation. Its story is a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of Istanbul.
