Did you know that Woolwich Polytechnic School boasts a history intertwined with the Victorian era’s Polytechnic movement?

Right here before us stands Woolwich Polytechnic School. Its legacy stretches back to the late 19th century. A time when polytechnics aimed to uplift the working classes through education and moral guidance. Woolwich was only the second such institution.

Frank Didden a fitter at the Royal Arsenal fueled the school’s creation. He envisioned a polytechnic to improve the lives of Woolwich’s residents many of whom labored in local factories or the Royal Arsenal. Didden secured support from the influential Quintin Hogg. Hogg a philanthropist involved in the ragged school movement. Hogg’s vision included a gymnasium classrooms a reading room and even a coffee bar.

Thomas Anthony Denny a bacon merchant provided crucial funding. This secured the polytechnic’s first location a house on William Street now Calderwood Street. The polytechnic quickly expanded. In 1891 it offered 38 courses to 504 students. By 1892 that number skyrocketed to nearly 800 students enrolled in 80 courses. It’s remarkable to think of the impact this early institution had.

Woolwich Polytechnic’s initial evening classes led to the establishment of a day school for boys in 1897. This marked the beginning of Woolwich’s first secondary school. The school continued to evolve. It became a junior technical school training boys for engineering roles. In 1956 it fell under the London County Council’s purview as Woolwich Polytechnic Boys School.

Later the school transformed into a comprehensive school occupying two sites. In 1997 it became a Technology College. Finally in 1999 the school’s two sites merged in Thamesmead. The school has since flourished maintaining a stellar reputation for pastoral care. It also became known for improved exam results. In 2011 it achieved outstanding Ofsted ratings. In 2014 it transitioned to academy status.

Woolwich Polytechnic School stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and community spirit. From its humble beginnings it has evolved into a thriving institution. It continues to shape the lives of countless young men. A true emblem of Woolwich’s rich history and enduring commitment to education.
