Have you ever stood in the shadow of a steel cross? That’s the centrepiece of St Agnes’ Catholic Church, a majestic structure in Highett, Melbourne. It wasn’t always this way, you see. Before this striking building rose, the first mass in Highett was celebrated as early as 1948 – a humble beginning in the Parish Hall. Later, in 1951, Father Gerard Quilter became the first Parish Priest for St Agnes’. But the new church, dedicated to the saint Agnes, wasn’t completed until 1969, built in a period of peace and hope after much hardship.
This beautiful church, with its welcoming foyer and renovated rooms, is like a warm embrace on a cold day. It even has a memorial garden, where you can reflect on the lives of those who came before us. Today, St Agnes’ is a vibrant heart of the community, welcoming people of all ages. Even the church’s patron saint, Agnes – a young woman who stood steadfast in her faith, even in the face of persecution – reminds us that hope and faith have always been a source of strength. And as you stand before this symbolic steel cross, maybe you can feel that strength too.
