“A sanctuary of hope, a beacon of faith.” That’s how many describe the Zion United House of Prayer in Seattle. Yet, the Zion United House of Prayer’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the countless lives touched, the dreams realized, and the unwavering spirit of a community. Established in 1890, the Zion United House of Prayer’s roots lie in humble beginnings. A small group of African Americans, some from Seattle’s First Baptist Church, began holding prayer services in their homes. First Baptist extended a helping hand, offering both spiritual guidance and a physical space—a store at 14th and East Madison—for the fledgling congregation to hold services. The church was formally reorganized and incorporated in 1894 and 1903, respectively. The early years were marked by a nomadic existence. The congregation worshipped at various locations, including the Young Naturalist Hall, Peoples Church, and sites at 16th and Madison, 2nd and Spring, and 9th and Olive. Finally, in 1907, the Zion United House of Prayer established its first permanent home at 11th and Union. A significant chapter in the Zion United House of Prayer’s story unfolded in 1918. The church acquired an eight-room house, later converted into a parsonage, and a sizable lot at 19th and East Madison, the present site. Construction on a new brick church began in 1920, a testament to the growing congregation. During construction, services continued uninterrupted at a temporary location on 21st and Jefferson. The 1940s brought a surge in membership as African Americans migrated to Seattle for wartime work. Under Reverend F. Benjamin Davis, a building fund campaign was launched, gaining momentum under subsequent pastors. In 1963, the old parsonage was replaced with the $250,000 Educational Unit. The Zion United House of Prayer embraced its cultural heritage in 1975 with the construction of a new African-inspired sanctuary. Designed by Durham, Anderson, and Freed, it reflected the church’s rich history and growing congregation. Inside, 18 magnificent stained-glass windows, created by Douglas Phillips, depicted influential figures in African American history and religion. These windows, known as “The Church and the World,” were unique to the Zion United House of Prayer, designed never to be replicated. From its humble beginnings as prayer meetings in homes to its current status as a landmark, the Zion United House of Prayer remains a testament to faith, resilience, and community.
