Did you know Uni\u00f3n started as Villa Restauraci\u00f3n? It was 1849. General Oribe founded it. He needed a base during the siege of Montevideo. At that time Montevideo was basically just the Ciudad Vieja.

Uni\u00f3n’s story is fascinating. It began during a civil war. Oribe’s forces surrounded Montevideo. He set up the Tribunal of Uni\u00f3n in this area.

The village of Restauraci\u00f3n became important. It was the heart of Oribe’s operations. After the war in 1851, something special happened. Restauraci\u00f3n became Villa de la Uni\u00f3n.

Uni\u00f3n transformed. From a village it grew into a town. Today, Uni\u00f3n is a vibrant neighborhood in Montevideo. It has a rich history and a strong identity.

The name Restauraci\u00f3n meant something. It signified the seat of Uruguay’s restored legitimate government. Meanwhile, the colorados controlled Montevideo’s walled city.

Uni\u00f3n shares borders with many other barrios. These include Mercado Modelo, Villa Espa\u00f1ola, and Maro\u00f1as. It also borders Malv\u00edn Norte, Buceo, and Parque Batlle. La Blanqueada and Larra\u00f1aga are nearby too.

Important places mark Uni\u00f3n. The Sanctuary of the Miraculous Medal is here. People call it “Iglesia de la Uni\u00f3n”. Also, find the Parish Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Saint Cajetan Church and the Parish Church of St. Joseph are here too.

Uni\u00f3n offers education. Colegio y Liceo Santa Luisa de Marillac has been here since 1919. The Vicentian Sisters founded it. Lay people have run it since 1993.

A key road changed names. It was named Jos\u00e9 Gervasio Artigas in 1840. Artigas was a founder of Rio Plata federalism. He was a hero of Uruguay’s independence. After Oribe’s defeat the road became Avenida 8 de Octubre. It marked the end of the Great War in 1851.

By 1880, Villa Uni\u00f3n was a suburb. In 1902, it became a Montevideo barrio. Plaza Cipriano Mir\u00f3 was planned then. Carlos Racine, a French landscaper, designed it.

Uni\u00f3n prospered in the late 1960s. More buildings arose and trade increased. The government expanded streets. Avenida 8 de Octubre grew into a shopping center.

Modern Uni\u00f3n has evolved. Loan houses have sprung up. Mobile phone and video game shops are common. New housing complexes exist.

Today, Uni\u00f3n blends history and modernity. Historic buildings stand alongside new ones. Past, present, and future coexist here. Uni\u00f3n is a testament to Montevideo’s dynamic spirit. It embodies resilience and progress.
