Did you know that Hutchinson Hall was once a women’s gymnasium? Now, it’s home to classrooms and studios. But its history is much richer than you might think.

Hutchinson Hall stands as a testament to the University of Washington’s evolving story. It was completed in 1927. The building initially served as the Women’s Gymnasium. Bebb and Gould designed it. They were known for their Tudor/Gothic Revival style. This style became a campus architectural hallmark.

The Women’s Gymnasium addressed a specific need. In 1927, the UW required physical fitness for both men and women. Hutchinson Hall provided women with many athletic opportunities. They could participate in soccer, tennis, and dancing. Other options included hockey, basketball, and even rifle shooting.

The building’s design adapted to the landscape. It also accommodated the needs of its users. It featured a large gymnasium. There was also a dance studio, restrooms, and a swimming pool. Outdoor facilities complemented the indoor spaces. These included tennis courts and a soccer field.

Mary Gross Hutchinson left a lasting impact. She headed the UW’s Women’s Physical Education Department. The university renamed the Women’s Physical Education Building in her honor in 1947. Hutchinson joined the UW in 1919. She served as department head from 1930 until her death.

By 1984, times had changed. The university renovated the building to house the Drama Department. This transformation occurred in 1986. The renovation adapted the space for classrooms and a costume shop.

Hutchinson Hall’s architecture is notable. It utilized steps to manage grade changes. The building also curved to follow Stevens Way. Its design reflected distinct functional components. A northern pavilion housed offices and a small gymnasium. A central section included a tower with dressing rooms and classrooms. The main gym occupied another section. Finally, a southern section contained the swimming pool.

Look closely at the details. The Far West Clay Company supplied the face brick. This brick also appears on other Tudor/Gothic buildings on campus. These include the Home Economics Building and Philosophy Hall.

Today, Hutchinson Hall continues to serve the university. It adapts to new needs while retaining its historical character. The next time you pass by Hutchinson Hall, remember its past. It was once a hub of women’s athletics. It stands as a reminder of the university’s commitment to both physical and artistic pursuits.
