Did you hear the tale of a king who fell for a peasant girl? That story is immortalized in the Matthias Fountain. It stands proudly in the Buda Castle’s western forecourt. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a Neo-Baroque masterpiece by Alajos Stróbl. Some even call it the “Trevi Fountain of Budapest”.

King Matthias Corvinus leads a hunting party in this scene. Bronze figures stand atop rocks. Water flows between the boulders. It’s a theatrical display reminiscent of Rome’s Trevi Fountain but smaller.

The monumental facade behind the Matthias Fountain adds to the drama. Giant Corinthian columns flank the scene. King Matthias’ coat of arms decorates a triumphal arch. Art Nouveau elements add a unique contrast.

King Matthias stands tall in hunting attire. He holds a crossbow. A stag lies dead at his feet. A henchman blows a horn nearby. A hunting leader rests on a boulder. Three hounds complete the central group.

Look to the sides. You’ll see more bronze figures. They connect to the main scene through gestures. Szép Ilonka also known as Helen the Fair stands to the right. She is a heroine from a ballad by Mihály Vörösmarty. The ballad tells of Ilonka and Matthias falling in love during his incognito hunts. When Ilonka learns his true identity, she believes their love is impossible. She dies of a broken heart. Ilonka gazes at the king. She protects her fawn from the hunters.

On the left stands Galeotto Marzio. He was an Italian chronicler in King Matthias’ court. A sighthound rests at his feet. A falcon perches on his fist.

Alajos Stróbl and Alajos Hauszmann created the Matthias Fountain. King Franz Joseph approved the design. Stróbl began work in 1899. The henchman figure won a gold medal in 1901. Duke Pálffy sent models for the hounds. The fountain was unveiled in 1904.

The Matthias Fountain weathered World War II. Only the middle dog was destroyed. Jenő Grantner reconstructed it. A restoration of the Matthias Fountain occurred in 2010.

Local folklore whispers of safe returns. Toss a coin into the fountain. You are destined to revisit Budapest someday. The Matthias Fountain stands as a reminder of love. It also embodies Hungary’s rich history.
