“Freedom is not to be sold for all the gold in the world.” These words etched above Fort Lovrijenac’s gate whisper a tale of defiance. Right here before you stands this mighty fortress a testament to Dubrovnik’s unwavering spirit.

Fort Lovrijenac also known as St Lawrence Fortress or Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar is more than just stone and mortar. It’s a symbol of resilience. A story etched in its very walls. Built on a sheer cliff 37 meters high it dominates the western entrance to the city.

The story begins in the 11th century. The Venetians ambitious and powerful aimed to build a fort on this strategic spot. They wanted to control Dubrovnik. But the citizens of Dubrovnik were faster. They built Fort Lovrijenac in just three months. Imagine the frantic energy. The tireless work. When the Venetian ships arrived laden with building materials they found the fort already complete. Their plans thwarted.

The fort’s design is ingenious. Thick walls 12 meters thick on the sides facing potential enemies. Yet the walls facing the city are a mere 60 centimeters thick. A clever tactic by the Republic of Ragusa. Should a commander ever betray the city the thin walls could be easily breached.

Over the centuries Fort Lovrijenac stood strong. Withstanding sieges and conflicts. Its imposing presence a constant reminder of Dubrovnik’s liberty. Today it stands as a stage for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Shakespeare’s Hamlet a fitting tribute to this magnificent fort. Even Daniel Day Lewis has graced its stage.

So stand here. Feel the history beneath your feet. See the stunning views from its terraces. Hear the echoes of centuries past. Fort Lovrijenac whispers tales of courage and freedom. It’s a story worth hearing. A story that lives on.
