Catherine Gladstone, wife of Prime Minister William Gladstone, graced Newington Gardens with her presence on May 5th, 1884. She inaugurated this tranquil oasis, a stark contrast to its grim predecessor. Newington Gardens, formerly known as Gaol Park until the 1960s, occupies the very ground where the infamous Horsemonger Lane Gaol once stood. This prison, also known as the New Gaol or Surrey County Gaol, cast a long shadow over the area for nearly a century. Designed by George Gwilt the Elder, the gaol opened in 1799. It was the largest prison in Surrey at the time. Gwilt also designed the nearby Sessions House, which now serves as the Inner London Crown Court. The imposing walls of the gaol witnessed a dark spectacle on November 13, 1849. A crowd of 50,000 gathered to witness the double execution of Frederick and Maria Manning. This event, known as the “Bermondsey Horror,” gripped the nation. The Mannings were convicted of murdering Maria’s lover, Patrick O’Connor. The execution was a spectacle that drew a massive crowd, a macabre carnival of sorts. This morbid curiosity surrounding the execution deeply disturbed Charles Dickens. He had even rented a room to observe the event. Dickens documented the unsettling atmosphere, the callous revelry of the crowd, and the horrific nature of the public execution. He later channeled his revulsion and fascination into his novel “Bleak House.” The character of Mademoiselle Hortense, Lady Dedlock’s sinister maid, is said to be inspired by Maria Manning. Newington Gardens, today a peaceful haven, carries the echoes of this grim history.
