From humble beginnings to a national stage. That’s the story of the Théâtre de la Commune. Right here in Aubervilliers.

The Théâtre de la Commune didn’t start as a grand theatre. It began life as Aubervilliers’ municipal fête hall. Built in 1900. This unassuming building hosted dances boxing matches and even wrestling. Imagine the energy! The laughter the cheers the thuds of fists and bodies.

In 1960 Gabriel Garran and Jack Ralite had a vision. They transformed this fête hall into the Théâtre de la Commune. It officially opened in 1965. Sharing the space with the municipal library. A bold and necessary mission for the time.

In 1975 architects Jean Perrottet and Valentin Fabre redesigned the theatre. The renovation was significant. It marked a shift towards a more modern design. They were the same architects who worked on the Théâtre de la Ville and the Théâtre national de Chaillot. This wasn’t just a renovation. It was a statement.

The Théâtre de la Commune became a Centre dramatique national in 1971. The first in the Paris suburbs. A remarkable achievement. It attracted acclaimed directors. Alfredo Arias brought emotional intensity. Brigitte Jaques and François Regnault mixed classics and contemporary works. Didier Bezace championed a popular theatre that blended grand history with everyday life. Marie-Josée Malis led the theatre from 2014 to 2023. Her focus was on engaged theatre. Tightly connecting creation and the political life of the city.

The current director Frédéric Bélier-Garcia started in 2024. He is a director writer and film director. His goal is a multidisciplinary artistic project. The theatre now dialogues with film dance music and even stand-up comedy. A testament to its ongoing evolution. The Théâtre de la Commune.
