Gazing upon the serene facade of the İmrahor Camii, can you sense the echoes of centuries past? This mosque, nestled in Üsküdar’s Salacak district, holds a captivating tale. The İmrahor Camii’s story begins in 1597. It was commissioned by a remarkable figure, Mehmed Ağa, the Mirahur, or Master of the Horse, to Grand Vizier Cağalazâde Sinan Pasha. The term “Mirahur,” evolving from “mir-i ahur” or “emir-i ahur,” denoted the esteemed official responsible for the sultan’s stables and equine affairs. This mosque stands as a testament to his influence and devotion. The İmrahor Camii has faced the trials of time. It underwent repairs in 1898. By 1941, it had fallen into disrepair, only to be restored once more in 1966. The mosque’s architecture showcases a blend of materials. The sturdy walls, crafted from cut stone, embrace a square layout. The roof, however, features a wooden framework, a striking contrast to the stone. Inside, a marble minbar and mihrab, adorned with marble cladding, exude elegance. The single-gallery minaret, with its cut stone base and brick upper section, adds a touch of grace to the İmrahor Camii. It’s also known as Mirahur Camii, a reminder of its founder’s prestigious role. Within the mosque’s courtyard, treasures await. The Başkadın Çeşmesi, the İbrahim Paşa water gauge, and the Sadaka Taşı (charity stone) offer glimpses into the daily lives and customs of those who once graced this sacred space. The İmrahor Camii is more than just a mosque. It’s a portal to a bygone era, where the clatter of hooves and the whispers of prayers intertwined.
