“Imagine switches that nature flips.” That’s the essence of the Switchwall installation. It stands as a testament to Seattle’s innovative spirit. Completed in 2020, this public artwork adorns a new electrical substation. NBBJ Architects collaborated with artist Ned Kahn on this project. The Switchwall’s facades are clad with thousands of wind sensors.

Each sensor acts as a switch, responding to the wind’s direction. Instead of human hands, the wind dictates their movement. This creates a dynamic display of color. The colors change based on the wind’s activity.

The Switchwall evokes the complexity of Seattle’s electrical grid. Pulses of colored light sparkle across the facades. It’s a mesmerizing sight. The artwork transforms a functional structure into a vibrant art piece.

The Switchwall is more than just a pretty facade. It’s an interactive experience. Every single switch uniquely impacts the visual output. Each combination of switch positions results in a unique visual result.

It’s a wall of many light switches. Switch Wall was developed as part of a series of projects. These projects aimed to create large scale interactive art exhibits. The exhibits needed to be compact enough to travel to less accessible communities.

Imagine standing here on a windy day. You can see the switches flicker and change. The colors dance before your eyes. It’s a reminder of the power and beauty of nature. The Switchwall installation blends art and technology.

The project highlights how infrastructure can be both functional and beautiful. It enhances the urban landscape. The Switchwall is a celebration of Seattle’s commitment to innovation and art. It transforms something ordinary into an extraordinary experience.

Take a moment to appreciate the Switchwall’s design. Consider the collaboration between art and architecture. Think about the energy that powers our city. The Switchwall is a reminder of the interconnectedness of everything around us.
