Is it true that a small stream can hold a country’s secrets? Right here flows the Meng. It may seem like just another waterway. But its story is intertwined with Liechtenstein’s own.

The Meng is a stream in Liechtenstein. It is part of the Rhine river system. The Rhine forms Liechtenstein’s western border with Switzerland.

Liechtenstein is a doubly landlocked microstate. It sits between Switzerland and Austria. Despite its small size, Liechtenstein has a rich history. Its story dates back to the Middle Paleolithic era. Neolithic farming settlements appeared around 5300 BCE.

In Roman times, the area was part of the Raetia province. Later, it fell under Frankish rule. The area that became Liechtenstein was under Frankish control. This lasted until the Treaty of Verdun in 843.

The Liechtenstein family came from Liechtenstein Castle in Lower Austria. They acquired land over time. But they needed land held directly from the Emperor to gain power. Karl I of Liechtenstein became a prince in the 17th century. Later, Hans-Adam I purchased Schellenberg and Vaduz.

In 1719, Vaduz and Schellenberg united. They became the Principality of Liechtenstein. Charles VI, the Holy Roman Emperor, decreed this. Liechtenstein became a sovereign member of the Holy Roman Empire.

The Rhine river is very important to Liechtenstein. It marks the border with Switzerland. It supplies water and provides recreation. The Samina river is the second-longest river in Liechtenstein.

Liechtenstein is mountainous. Its highest point is Grauspitz at 2,599 meters. The climate is mild due to southerly winds.

Liechtenstein has a unique political system. It combines monarchy, democracy, and direct democracy. The Prince retains significant powers.

Liechtenstein joined the German Confederation in 1815. It later formed a customs union with Switzerland. After World War I, it adopted the Swiss franc.

Liechtenstein remained neutral during World War II. It looked to Switzerland for help. Family treasures were moved to Liechtenstein for safekeeping.

Today, Liechtenstein has a high standard of living. It has a strong financial sector. It is known for its stunning Alpine scenery.

The Meng stream quietly flows on. It has witnessed centuries of Liechtenstein’s history. From ancient settlements to modern prosperity, it has been here. As you stand by the Meng, remember its silent role. It is a constant presence in Liechtenstein’s ever-evolving story.
