Have you noticed the riot of colors exploding from that tower? That’s the gopuram of the Nagarathar Sivan Temple. This South Indian temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. The Nagarathar Sivan Temple stands proudly on Dato Kramat Road in George Town, Penang.
The Nagarathar community built this temple. These Chettiars trace their roots to Kaveripattinam. That’s an ancient port city now known as Puhar in Tamil Nadu, India. The Nagarathars are business people who practice Hinduism. Building temples or “koil” for Shiva is part of their tradition. The Nagarathar Sivan Temple is one such koil here in Penang.
Did you know this temple is considered a “male” temple? The main sanctuary houses an image of Shiva. Male temples have a separate entrance for the female deity. That’s why Shiva’s consort Shakti has her own entrance here.
Take a closer look at the gopuram. Notice the elaborate five tiers. Intricate sculptures of deities and beasts adorn it. They are painted in many brilliant colors. The Nagarathar Sivan Temple’s gopuram is a sight to behold.
Getting to the Nagarathar Sivan Temple is quite easy. If you’re coming from the Komtar Bus Terminal, walk along Tek Soon Street to Penang Road. Then cross Penang Road. Turn left and walk along Jalan Penang. Continue onto Dato Kramat Road until you reach Magazine Circus. The Nagarathar Sivan Temple will be on your right. It is located across the road from the Sri Kamatchi Amman Temple. So you get two temples for the price of one.
