Robert Duchêne. A name whispered on the wind in Villejuif, a name etched onto a modest impasse. This isn’t just a quiet lane in a Parisian suburb. It’s a testament to courage, a stage for a story of defiance against overwhelming odds. Impasse Robert Duchêne, tucked away behind Collège Karl Marx in the Lozaits district, might seem unremarkable at first glance. But let’s peel back the layers of time, back to the tumultuous days of 1944. Robert Duchêne, born in Villejuif in 1924, lived with his parents at 4 Impasse du 14 juillet. He was just a young man, a laborer, when the shadow of the STO, the forced labor program in Germany, fell upon him. But Robert refused to be a cog in the Nazi war machine. He chose resistance, joining the FTPF. Paris, August 24, 1944. The city was rising, shaking off the shackles of occupation. Robert Duchêne, a young man transformed into a fighter, stood on a hastily erected barricade at the Terminus in Villejuif. He and his comrades were determined to halt the retreating German troops, to prevent them from regrouping and unleashing further chaos on Paris. The fight was fierce, the stakes impossibly high. Robert Duchêne fell that day, giving his life for the liberation of his city, for the future of his nation. He lies now in the Villejuif cemetery, honored with the inscription “Mort pour la France,” recognized as a true FFI, a fighter of the French Forces of the Interior. Impasse Robert Duchêne. More than just a street, it is a memory, a tribute to a young man who dared to resist.
