Built from red brick in 1877 Sankt Pauls Kirke stands tall. It is a Lutheran church in the heart of Copenhagen. Specifically it’s nestled in Nyboder a unique neighborhood. This area housed sailors of the Danish navy. The church’s construction was part of a wave of building projects in the 1870s. Copenhagen’s population was booming. New churches were needed to accommodate the growth. Unlike other churches built in new districts Sankt Pauls Kirke was constructed within the city’s older confines. Architect Johannes Emil Gnudtzmann designed it. This was his first independent architectural work. Master mason Vilhelm Köhler oversaw the construction.

Sankt Pauls Kirke’s architecture is a beautiful blend of styles. The red brick exterior is adorned with intricate details. Blinds arches columns and pinnacles grace its corners. The interior is equally impressive. The current altarpiece is a gilded crucifix. It replaced an earlier painting. This artistic substitution happened in 1887. The new crucifix was a gift from Pastor Christian Møller. The church boasts two organs. The main organ is a magnificent instrument. It has 42 voices and 3126 pipes. It underwent expansions in 1926 and 1938. The choir organ is a more recent addition. It was built by Henk Klop in 2000. Frederik Magle has served as organist since 2017.

Sankt Pauls Kirke almost faced closure in 2012. Copenhagen’s Stiftsråd recommended its closure. The church was one of sixteen facing potential shutdown. The recommendation stemmed from dwindling congregations. Fortunately Sankt Pauls Kirke survived. It remains a vibrant part of the community. The church underwent renovations in recent years. The spire and front facade received a much needed restoration from 2015 to 2017. The restoration aimed to address crumbling masonry. Guldmann Dam Prenor A/S and architects Toyberg-Frandzen led the project. Today Sankt Pauls Kirke stands as a testament to Copenhagen’s rich history and enduring faith. Its survival against closure is a testament to its community’s resilience. It’s an example of a church successfully adapting to changing times.
