“They shall have a name perpetual and fame permanent and immortal” These words etched into the Cornish Rebellion Plaque resonate even now. This plaque commemorates a pivotal moment in history a rebellion that shook the foundations of England. It stands as a testament to the courage and defiance of the Cornish people.

The Cornish Rebellion of 1497 was a dramatic uprising. It was sparked by King Henry VII’s heavy taxes on tin miners. These taxes violated agreements made centuries earlier. The Cornish people felt wronged. They were not going to take it lying down.

Michael An Gof a blacksmith and Thomas Flamank a lawyer led this rebellion. Fifteen thousand strong they marched from Cornwall all the way to London. Their journey was remarkable. They received provisions and recruits along the way. They largely avoided violence. The rebels even reached Winchester without major conflict.

Their aim was to challenge the king’s unjust policies. They arrived at Blackheath on June 13 1497. The battle that followed was fierce. The Cornish army was significantly outnumbered by the royal forces. Despite their bravery they were defeated. The battle is known as the Battle of Deptford Bridge or the Battle of Blackheath. This division of forces contributed to their defeat.

The leaders An Gof and Flamank were executed at Tyburn on June 27 1497. Their final words echoing their hopes for lasting recognition were inscribed on this very plaque. Lord Audley another leader was beheaded at Tower Hill. This rebellion though ultimately unsuccessful left an enduring mark on history. It demonstrated the unwavering spirit of the Cornish people.

The plaque itself a more recent addition erected in 1997 marks the 500th anniversary. It’s a poignant reminder of their struggle. Their legacy lives on. Look closely. Remember their sacrifice. Their story is a testament to the power of defiance in the face of injustice. The Cornish Rebellion Plaque stands as a beacon of remembrance. It tells the story of courage determination and the enduring spirit of Cornwall.
