“A street named after a mayor? How extraordinary!” Rue Édouard Nortier, tucked away in the heart of Neuilly-sur-Seine, whispers tales of a remarkable man. Rue Édouard Nortier is more than just a street. It’s a tribute to Édouard Nortier, a man who dedicated his life to serving his community. Before Rue Édouard Nortier bore his name, it was a quiet lane known simply by its location. Édouard Nortier, born in 1859, wasn’t always destined for politics. He was a successful businessman, a veteran of the Tunisian campaign, and a proud recipient of the Colonial Medal. His journey into public service began in 1902 when he was elected to the Neuilly city council. As mayor, Nortier had a vision for a thriving Neuilly. He championed the expansion of Lycée Pasteur, understanding that education was key to the city’s future. His dedication extended beyond the classroom. He secured funds for a horticultural space, recognizing the importance of green spaces for the community’s well-being. When World War I erupted, Édouard Nortier, despite his age and position, didn’t hesitate to answer the call to duty. He joined the 73rd Territorial Infantry Regiment as a captain, his sense of duty unwavering. Sadly, his life was cut short in 1914. He was fatally wounded near Ypres, Belgium. His sacrifice, a testament to his unwavering commitment to France, resonated deeply with the people of Neuilly. In 1921, his remains were returned to Neuilly, where he was laid to rest in a solemn ceremony. Today, Rue Édouard Nortier stands as a testament to his legacy. It’s a reminder that even in the quietest corners of a city, stories of courage, dedication, and unwavering love for one’s community can be found.
