Remember mammoth baked potatoes? That’s part of the DeLuxe Bar & Grill’s early history. Welcome to a Seattle landmark. The DeLuxe Bar & Grill has been a Capitol Hill fixture for decades. It stands at 625 Broadway East.
The DeLuxe started as a tavern near the end of Prohibition. Later, a grill was added. This grill became known for its huge baked potatoes and cheap steak dinners. These went well with the growing beer selection.
In the early 1960s Joe Rogel and Bernie Minsk bought the DeLuxe. They gradually changed it. They expanded the restaurant and the menu. Hard liquor was added too. Remember the kamikaze craze?
Then in 1999 Joe’s son Barry and his wife Keely took over. They expanded it again. They added even more food and bar choices.
The DeLuxe Bar and Grill has stayed true to its roots. It is a classic neighborhood spot. Seattle Metropolitan described it as Broadway’s veteran. It has served burgers for over 40 years.
The DeLuxe Bar and Grill’s menu offers diverse options. You could choose burgers or sandwiches. Fish and chips are a classic choice. Or perhaps a Cobb salad with chicken appeals? There’s also a Vietnam Chop Chop salad. Baked potatoes are still available. The Bour B-Q burger features a prime beef patty. It includes smoked cheddar and bourbon barbecue sauce. It comes with onion rings and coleslaw.
Happy hour at the DeLuxe is special. Quesadillas are on offer. You might find Southwest crab or vegetable versions. These come with salsa and sour cream. Sliders and black bean nachos are also available. Spinach and artichoke dip is another option. Microbrews complement the food.
The DeLuxe Bar and Grill boasts a rich history. It has operated at the same location for many years. The space has boozy roots dating back to the 1930s. Thomas McClanahan’s Beer Parlor opened in 1934. It was later renamed De Luxe Tavern.
In 1980, the bar printed novelty currency called Deluxe Bucks. These were twice the size of real dollars. They clearly stated: “This is not legal tender.” However, the U.S. Secret Service raided the DeLuxe. They demanded the “contraband.”
The DeLuxe Bar and Grill is more than just a restaurant. It’s a piece of Seattle history. It’s a place where good times are always on tap. So grab a burger, a beer, and soak in the atmosphere.
