Gazing upon the Szent Walburga Statue in Budapest, one might wonder about the stories etched into its serene presence. The statue, a quiet observer amidst the bustling city, depicts Saint Walpurga, an Anglo-Saxon nun who played a key role in spreading Christianity in 8th-century Germany. Szent Walburga, born around 710 AD, hailed from a remarkable family. Her father, Richard the Pilgrim, was a West Saxon sub-king. Her mother, Wuna of Wessex, connected her to a lineage of saints, including her uncle, Saint Boniface, the “Apostle of the Germans.” Even her brothers, Willibald and Winibald, were later canonized. Educated at Wimborne Abbey in Dorset, young Walpurga learned the art of manuscript illumination and the renowned Opus Anglicanum, a delicate needlework prized throughout Europe. However, her path led not to artistic pursuits but to missionary work. Around 737, Saint Boniface recruited his nephews and niece to aid his mission in Germany. Walpurga, along with Willibald and Winibald, traveled to Francia (present-day Württemberg and Franconia) to help convert the pagan Germanic tribes. Szent Walburga’s contributions were not limited to missionary work. She is believed to have written her brother Willibald’s biography and a Latin account of his travels in Palestine, though scholars now attribute these texts to another nun, Hugeburc of Heidenheim. Following her brothers’ footsteps, Szent Walburga joined the double monastery of Heidenheim am Hahnenkamm, founded by Willibald. She became its abbess after his death and later oversaw the entire Heidenheim monastery after Winibald’s passing. Szent Walburga’s legacy extends beyond her administrative and missionary achievements. Known for her piety and miraculous healing abilities, she died on February 25th, 777 or 779, and was buried at Heidenheim. Her remains were later transferred to Eichstätt in 870. A curious phenomenon is associated with Szent Walburga’s relics. A therapeutic oil, known as Walpurgis oil, is said to seep from her bones, particularly from October to February. This oil is believed to have healing properties, attracting pilgrims to her shrine. Standing before this statue in Budapest, we’re connected to a rich history spanning centuries and continents. Szent Walburga’s life, marked by devotion, service, and miraculous events, continues to inspire reverence and awe.
