Could a simple storefront become a spiritual powerhouse? That’s the story of Holy Temple True Church of Christ in Chicago. It stands as a testament to faith and perseverance.

In 1925, after Pastor Thomas Farley’s resignation, the congregation sought divine guidance. Elder John D. Harris and Sister Luivory Littlejohn both received the same message. The Lord had sent Brother Eleazar Lenox. Bishop William Roberts ordained Brother Lenox as Pastor.

Pastor Lenox’s first mission was to find a better home for his flock. He and Father John T. McCarroll found a storefront at 2673 W. Lake Street. They believed it was the right place. The congregation rallied to purchase it. A real estate agent swindled them. But the saints were not discouraged. They raised $500 for a down payment.

On January 1, 1928, the congregation moved into the storefront. It became known as “The Power House of Chicago”. It was also called the 26th Street Church. Twin Evangelists Reatha and Leatha Herndon led the dedication revival. Many souls were saved. The church’s popularity grew.

The Lake Street Church thrived. People packed the Sunday night services. They stood and looked through windows. They saw the saints rejoice and hear the Word of God. The church was remodeled and enlarged. Still, there was not enough room.

In 1944, Pastor Lenox walked to a Lutheran Church at 246 N. California Avenue. It was two blocks from the Lake Street Church. The Lutherans had decided to sell that morning. They agreed to sell for $35000 or $25000 cash. The congregation prayed and worked together. Members pledged from $25 to $200. Pastor Lenox used his life savings. Bishop Mason loaned Eld. Lenox the remaining money.

On June 10, 1945, the congregation marched to 246 N. California Avenue. A police escort and marching band accompanied them. The church was named Holy Temple Church of God In Christ. It was the most beautiful church in Chicago.

Mother Mary Dudley taught about God. Mother Anna Wynn comforted people. Mother Ada Walker gave counsel and advice.

Under Bishop Lenox’s leadership, there were nine Assistant Pastors. Holy Temple became a monument. Evangelists contributed to its growth. The church became an incubator for other churches.

Located at California and Walnut, now Bishop E. Lenox Drive, it is a landmark. Bishop Lenox pastored for 60 years. His son, Elder James E. Lenox, succeeded him.

Elder James Lenox cared about community affairs. He was a counselor for youth. He was also known as the “preacher’s preacher”. After his transition, Elder Lamont Lenox became pastor.

Pastor Lamont Lenox implemented new ministries. These include the James E. Lenox Bible Institute. He beautified the church.

Over 90 years later, some members from the Lake Street Church remain. Pastor Lamont continues the legacy. The Holy Temple True Church of Christ perseveres as a testament to faith. It has evolved into the Greater Holy Temple. It stands at 5701 West Midway Place. It is a historic church. William Eugene Drummond designed it. It is a Prairie School church. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 17, 1977.
