In 1901 a grand new home rose on Fenchurch Street. This was 71 Fenchurch Street the new headquarters of Lloyd’s Register. It was an impressive sight a classical stone palazzo designed by Thomas Collcutt. The building reflected Lloyd’s Register’s growing importance. Its design showcased elaborate decorations a rich complexity. This contrasted sharply with the modern building that would eventually stand beside it.

71 Fenchurch Street wasn’t just a workplace. It was a statement. The organisation had outgrown its previous location. They needed a building to match their ambition. The choice of Fenchurch Street was a bold one. At the time it was an unfashionable area of mixed uses and bleak warehouses. Yet Lloyd’s Register saw potential. They purchased a site for £66518. The committee tasked Collcutt with creating a building of grandeur. Initial designs were deemed too understated. The final design however was magnificent. It was constructed using first-class materials. Portland stone and carved Hopton Wood adorned the facades. Inside marble floors a grand staircase and oak or mahogany doors created an atmosphere of elegance.

The construction was a significant undertaking. Mowlems Ltd were chosen as the main contractors. Their reputation for fine stonework was impeccable. Their bid was also the lowest at £71460. Work started in January 1899. The decorative complexity meant construction took longer than anticipated. Lloyd’s Register finally took possession on December 16 1901. The completion of 71 Fenchurch Street marked a transformation for the area. From a grimy mercantile district it became a prestigious institutional address.

The story of 71 Fenchurch Street doesn’t end there. In the 20th century Lloyd’s Register expanded. They acquired several neighbouring buildings. By the 1990s it was clear that the jumble of buildings was inadequate. A decision was made to redevelop the site. The renowned Richard Rogers Partnership was commissioned. The result was a modern marvel of glass steel and concrete. It stands proudly alongside Collcutt’s original a testament to the enduring legacy of 71 Fenchurch Street. This fascinating building stands as a symbol of progress and architectural innovation. It continues to attract visitors. Its history is a testament to ambition vision and the enduring spirit of Lloyd’s Register.
