Opened in May 1884, Chingford Mount Cemetery stands as a testament to London’s rich history. This vast cemetery spans over 41 acres. It offers a tranquil escape from the city’s hustle.

Chingford Mount Cemetery was developed by the Abney Park Cemetery Company. The land was originally called Caroline Mount. It was named after the landowner. The cemetery’s main entrance faces Chingford Old Church.

The cemetery was designed as a sister site to Abney Park Cemetery. Abney Park Cemetery opened in 1840. It became one of the Magnificent Seven Cemeteries circling London. These cemeteries addressed the poor burial conditions in the inner city.

Originally, Abney Park was a joint-stock company. Chingford Mount Cemetery became the first new site under a new commercial venture in 1884. Hendon Park and Greenford followed.

The original chapel and gate lodges are gone. The impressive gates, railings, and gate piers still stand. These features offer a glimpse into the cemetery’s past grandeur.

In the 1970s, the managing company collapsed. Plans emerged to redevelop unused burial ground for housing. Local residents objected. The London Borough of Waltham Forest now cares for the cemetery.

Chingford Mount Cemetery is the final resting place of notable figures. Sculptor John Bacon rests here. The infamous Kray twins and their family members are buried here. Meteorologist John William Tripe is also interred here. Benjamin Pollock, founder of Pollock’s Toy Museum, is here too. Stage and film actor Leslie Phillips is also buried here.

The cemetery holds war graves of Commonwealth service personnel. There are 139 from World War I. There are 182 from World War II. A low screen wall surrounds the War Graves Plot in Section F13. It lists names of those without headstones.

Chingford Mount Cemetery provides a peaceful atmosphere. Bird songs fill the air. It is a haven for nature enthusiasts. Wildlife thrives on the outskirts.

The cemetery offers practical amenities. There is ample parking space. The signal strength is good. It is open seven days a week. Visiting hours vary by season.

Chingford Mount Cemetery stands as a well-maintained space. It has historical significance. It connects to war heroes and the Kray family. It offers convenience and connectivity for visitors. The site truly encapsulates a unique blend of history and tranquility.
