Despite his success, Vécsey faced challenges. He clashed with other commanders, most notably János Damjanich, but often resolved conflicts with grace. He was handed over to the Austrians, court-martialed, and sentenced to death by hanging. On October 6, 1849, Vécsey and his comrades were executed.
