“Why is the mosque closed?” a young boy whispered, tugging at his father’s hand. The Mosquée de Clamart stood silent, its doors shuttered. This wasn’t the first time the mosque had faced difficulties. In 2016, the brand new mosque, though unfinished, was forced to close due to numerous safety violations. Issues with the smoke extraction system, fire doors, signage, and even exposed electrical cables in the parking garage meant the building posed a serious risk. The closure order came directly from the mayor, based on the unfavorable opinion of the local safety commission. The Muslim community was naturally disappointed, having used the mosque for three years prior. The situation became even more complex when it was discovered that the mosque had been built with an unauthorized fourth floor. The original permit only allowed for three. While the Muslim Association of Clamart (AMC) had applied for a modification, it was denied. Despite this, the fourth floor was built. This legal battle, coupled with security concerns, painted a turbulent picture for the Mosquée de Clamart, a place meant for peace and reflection.
