Ninety years of history stand behind these walls. Coombe Boys’ School opened its doors in 1931. Originally, it was known as Beverley Central School.
Let’s step back in time. Picture the school in its early days. It has grown and changed significantly over the decades. Coombe Boys’ School celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2021. That’s a long legacy of educating young men.
In 2005, a name change occurred. Beverley Boys’ School became Coombe Boys’ School. This marked a new chapter in the school’s story.
A significant partnership formed in 2006. Coombe Boys’ School joined with Coombe Girls’ School. Together, they created the Coombe Academy Trust. This collaboration expanded educational opportunities for students. The school also partners with King’s College School, Wimbledon. The Kingston Teaching School Alliance includes Coombe Boys’ School. This alliance comprises over twenty schools. They work with Achieving for Children and two universities. These are UCL Institute of Education and the University of Roehampton.
Major changes are on the horizon. In February 2023, a rebuilding programme was announced. Large parts of the school will be demolished and replaced. This will create modern facilities for future generations.
Coombe Boys’ School excels in many areas. Ofsted inspections have consistently rated it highly. In 2013 and 2018, the school received a “Good with Outstanding Features” rating. Leadership and management were particularly praised in 2013. Inspectors noted the school’s strengths in teaching and student behaviour.
Academic achievements are noteworthy. Ofsted highlighted above-average attainment in English and mathematics. The sixth form vocational results are exceptionally strong. A supportive environment fosters student confidence. Students feel comfortable asking questions and pushing themselves further.
The Drama Department has earned national recognition. In 2020, it won the “National Outstanding School Drama Department” award. Judges lauded the department’s pursuit of excellence.
Sports play a vital role at Coombe Boys’ School. A range of sports are offered. These include football, table tennis, badminton, and rugby. Basketball, athletics and cricket are also available. The school has links with the local Malden Wanderers Cricket Club. Sporting achievements include success in Surrey basketball and football finals. They also reached national badminton finals. Impressively, they won the English Schools’ Football Association PlayStation F.C. Schools’ Cup twice in a row in 2014 and 2015.
In 2019, the Coombe Academy Trust launched CAPA. This is the Coombe Academy of Performing Arts. It is based at the Coombe Boys’ School site. CAPA provides out-of-hours tuition for the community. Boys and girls aged 9 upwards can participate.
Several notable individuals attended Coombe Boys’ School and its predecessor. Cyril Barton and Ian Bazalgette both received the Victoria Cross for bravery in World War II. Matthew Pennycook is the MP for Greenwich and Woolwich. Footballers Fabio Carvalho, Harvey Elliott, Ryan Sessegnon, and Steven Sessegnon are also alumni.
Many headteachers have led Coombe Boys’ School over the years. David Smith is the current headteacher, since 2015.
