The Molina de Almácigo is more than a structure. It’s a time capsule. It represents a pivotal shift in Fuerteventura’s lifestyle. From nomadic wanderers to settled farmers the island transformed. The demand for gofio and flour soared. This led to the creation of ingenious mills.
Initially these were “molinos de sangre” powered by human or animal strength. But that proved insufficient. The ingenuity of the islanders coupled with the reliable trade winds led to the development of windmills. This included the Molina de Almácigo.
These mills arrived between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The cultivation of tomatoes alfalfa wheat and barley flourished. The consistent trade winds fuelled this agricultural revolution. Windmills like the Molina de Almácigo became integral to the landscape.
The Molina de Almácigo differs from its “molino macho” counterparts. Those were taller structures based on Castilian designs. The Molina though represents a later innovation. It’s a more efficient design. The machinery is housed in a separate building. This meant the miller didn’t have to lug heavy sacks of grain up and down. The work became significantly easier.
This clever design emerged on La Palma in the late 19th century thanks to Isidoro Ortega Sánchez. His invention spread quickly. Local Fuerteventura carpenters and artisans adapted Ortega’s design. They created a unique hybrid. They blended aspects of traditional windmills with Ortega’s efficiency. The result is embodied in the Molina de Almácigo.
In 1994 this magnificent structure along with other windmills and molinas received recognition. They were declared Bien de Interés Cultural monuments. This declaration reflects the cultural and historical importance of these mills. They represent a chapter in Fuerteventura’s resilient and resourceful past. The Molina de Almácigo stands as an enduring symbol of human ingenuity adapting to the landscape. It is a legacy worth cherishing.
