How about stepping into a literary sanctuary? This is LiteraturHaus. It is Copenhagen’s haven for stories. Here at LiteraturHaus, we find ourselves in Denmark’s first literary house. It is a meeting place for writers, artists, and literature lovers.
LiteraturHaus opened its doors in April 2005. It became the first of its kind in Denmark. But its story began long before. The building itself has a rich history. It was built as a Methodist church named Bethania Kirke in 1892. Architects Henrik Hagemann and Knud Arne Petersen designed it. The church cost 28,000 kroner. The ground it stands on cost 11,000 kroner. That was back in 1900.
The LiteraturHaus idea comes from Germany. Today, Germany has over 20 well-established literary houses. This LiteraturHaus has walls of red brick and a gable facing the street. The former church space is more than 49 feet long. It is 34 feet wide and 21 feet high. It features a flat, coffered ceiling. Light walls and panels surround the space. Once, a pulpit stood before the altar. A baptismal font stood beside it. An organ sat on the gallery wall. The church held around 300 seats. Below the church, a crypt housed meeting rooms and living quarters.
LiteraturHaus is located on Møllegade 7. It is in the heart of Nørrebro in Copenhagen. LiteraturHaus is more than just a building. It is a cultural meeting place. It is for those who live for literature, music, and drama. Here, language is the anchor.
Throughout the year, LiteraturHaus offers a diverse program. There are concerts in intimate settings. LiteraturHaus also hosts film screenings and art exhibitions. ArtRaum is LiteraturHaus’ exhibition space. It is located under the old church roof. It hosts unique exhibitions.
