“Abandoned? But why would they leave a place like this?” wondered a young hiker, gazing at the sturdy, two-story building. Perched high on Sniježnica Konavoska mountain, the Škola Kuna Konavoska seemed a world away from bustling Dubrovnik. Our journey today takes us to this curious structure. Once, the Škola Kuna Konavoska wasn’t a hikers’ haven but a humble village schoolhouse, its halls echoing with children’s laughter. The Croatian Mountaineering Association (HPD Dubrovnik) recognized its potential. They envisioned a cozy mountain retreat, a place for weary hikers to rest and recharge after conquering the slopes of Sniježnica Konavoska. They lovingly restored the schoolhouse, transforming it into the Škola Kuna Konavoska mountain hut. Sadly, legal disputes cast a shadow over the Škola Kuna Konavoska. Today, it stands abandoned, a silent testament to unrealized dreams. The cheerful blue sign of the HPD Dubrovnik, once a beacon of welcome, has been removed. Yet, standing here, one can almost hear the echoes of laughter and camaraderie, reminding us that even abandoned places hold stories waiting to be told.
