Why is that bronze fish staring down at us? That, my friends, is the Fischbrunnen, the Fish Fountain, and it’s a Munich icon with a story to tell. Right here in the heart of Marienplatz, the Fischbrunnen has been keeping watch for centuries, though not always in the same form you see today. The Fischbrunnen we admire now was brought back to life in 1954 by Josef Henselmann. He incorporated surviving pieces of the original, a neo-Gothic masterpiece by Konrad Knoll that fell victim to World War II. But the Fischbrunnen’s tale goes back even further, to a time when Marienplatz was a bustling marketplace. Imagine fishmongers dangling their catch in the fountain’s cool water to keep them fresh, a tradition echoed in that bronze fish perched high above. Look closely, and you’ll see three figures surrounding the basin, buckets in hand. They represent butcher apprentices participating in the “Metzgersprung,” a rowdy ritual that saw them leaping into the fountain on Rose Monday. This symbolic act marked their transition to journeymen, washing away their youthful sins. Although banned for a time, this tradition has been revived and is still celebrated every three years. So next time you hear the splash of the Fischbrunnen, remember, it’s not just water you hear, but the echo of Munich’s vibrant past.
