Silicon Island, a man-made marvel, is rising from the sea, just 350 meters from Penang Island’s southern shore. It’s under the watchful eye of George Town, the vibrant heart of Penang.
Silicon Island isn’t just a patch of reclaimed land. It’s a vision, a 2,300-acre extension of the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone. This zone has been a cornerstone of Penang’s economic success. Silicon Island is poised to amplify that success. The story of Silicon Island began in 2015. It started as a part of the ambitious Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP). This plan sought to modernize Penang’s transportation network, including a light rail transit system. The project, however, faced significant hurdles. Funding was a major challenge. Initial proposals for land reclamation around Gazumbo Island were scrapped. There were serious environmental concerns.
Eventually, the southern coast of Penang Island was chosen for reclamation. This decision promised significant economic benefits and much-needed space for industrial expansion. The Penang South Reclamation (PSR) scheme was born, later evolving into the Penang South Islands (PSI) project. This project initially envisioned three islands. This grand vision met with political opposition, environmental appeals, and a constant push and pull between various stakeholders. The project was scaled down to focus solely on one island: Silicon Island. In 2023, reclamation work finally began. This intricate process involves hydraulic sand fill, prefabricated vertical drains, and surcharge. These techniques ensure the stability of the newly created land. The island is being raised 3 meters above sea level to protect it from high tides and storm surges.
Silicon Island isn’t just about industry. It is designed with a focus on sustainability, incorporating green spaces and public areas. The projected completion date for the reclamation is 2032. By 2027, the first factory is expected to be operational. Silicon Island represents a pivotal moment in Penang’s history.
