Ahmed Rıza’s dream took brick-and-mortar form right here at Kandilli Kız Anadolu Lisesi. This is not just any school it is a place steeped in history. It stands as one of Turkey’s oldest and most respected girls’ high schools.
Kandilli Kız Anadolu Lisesi began its journey in 1916. Ahmed Rıza a prominent figure of the Young Turk movement envisioned it. He wanted to create the first public girls’ high school in the Ottoman Empire. Wars delayed his noble project for years.
Imagine princess Adile Sultan. She donated her summer residence. This palace became the school’s first home. Abdülaziz had the palace built for his sister. It became Adile Sultan Imperial Girls School. The school’s first graduates emerged in 1920.
In 1924 the school changed its name. It was renamed Kandilli Secondary School. Then in 1931 it adopted its current name. Kandilli Kız Anadolu Lisesi. The school quickly became a pillar of education.
Later in 1969 the high school classes relocated to a newer building. The Adile Sultan Palace served as a dormitory. It housed boarding students until disaster struck in 1986. A fire caused by an electrical fault gutted the historic palace. Only the walls remained.
Alumni rallied to save their beloved landmark. They created a foundation. They tirelessly raised funds to rebuild the palace. But funds were insufficient. The palace’s full restoration seemed impossible.
Then came Sakıp Sabancı a generous businessman. He donated the funds needed to complete the restoration. In 2006 the Adile Sultan Palace reopened. It became the Sakıp Sabancı Kandilli Education and Culture Center. It was no longer directly affiliated with the high school. However it stands as a testament to the school’s enduring legacy.
Kandilli Kız Anadolu Lisesi continues to thrive. It prepares young women for the challenges of the 21st century. The school emphasizes science art and peace. It encourages students to embrace both local and global values.
