Whiting Junior-Senior High School

In 1898, a small group of just eight students embarked on an educational journey, marking the humble beginnings of Whiting High School. These pioneers of learning paved the way for generations of Oilers to come. Whiting High School, standing proudly in Whiting, Indiana, isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the community’s commitment to education. Originally, these eight students occupied the upper floor of the “Old High School Building” at 119th Street and Oliver. The first graduating class of Whiting High School in 1900 consisted of five students, four girls and one boy. Their graduation ceremony wasn’t held within the school’s walls, but rather at Goebel’s Opera House on John Street, a testament to the school’s close ties with the community. As the town of Whiting grew, so did the school. The current building, opened in 1910, stands as a symbol of progress and aspiration. Over the years, Whiting High School has seen additions like the Manual Training building, designed to equip students with practical skills for the Standard Oil Company. McGregor Elementary School, dedicated in 1901, served the younger Oilers before closing its doors in 1975. The junior high building, completed in 1924 with its impressive auditorium, gymnasium, and swimming pool, further expanded the school’s reach. Whiting High School has not only witnessed the changing educational landscape but also played a crucial role in shaping it. The school’s athletic teams, the Oilers, proudly carry on a tradition of excellence. The 1954 State Football Championship stands as a shining moment in the school’s history, a testament to the dedication and teamwork of its student-athletes. Whiting High School remains a vital part of the Whiting community, a place where students learn, grow, and achieve their dreams. From its modest beginnings with eight students to the thriving institution it is today, Whiting High School continues to inspire generations of learners.
