Picture the grandeur of Villa Ingenohl. This magnificent building stands before you a testament to history. It’s more than just a pretty face. Villa Ingenohl in Bonn’s Gronau district boasts a rich past. Built between 1895 and 1896 it was commissioned by Carl Ingenohl. The design is the work of the renowned architect Anton Zengeler. He masterfully blended elements of the picturesque Italian Renaissance style.

The villa’s address is Raiffeisenstrasse 5. It sits proudly overlooking the Rhine River. It shares a special connection with its neighbor Villa Heckmann. Imagine the elegant parties that once graced its halls. The original owner Carl Ingenohl never lived to see its completion. His widow inherited the property in 1919.

She oversaw significant renovations. Bonner architect Julius Rolffs updated the interior. The changes brought the villa up to early 20th-century standards. The entrance hall was reduced in size to make room for a vestibule a cloakroom a toilet and a WC.

The villa then found a new owner: the student fraternity Corps Saxonia. They further altered the building. During the Nazi era it served as an SS headquarters. Afterward it housed the main customs office.

Post-war Bonn became the capital of West Germany. Villa Ingenohl briefly hosted the Chancellor’s Office’s foreign affairs department. This department became the Foreign Office in 1951. Villa Ingenohl was its first home. It housed 22 offices. It also served as a liaison office to the Allied High Commission.

The Foreign Office moved to a new building in 1954/55. The government used Villa Ingenohl as a daycare center before moving to Berlin in 1999.

A significant loss was the closure of the original ground floor loggia. It was turned into an indoor space. The original gardens also vanished. The Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks sold the property. Now Villa Ingenohl belongs to the Carl Richard Montag Foundation. It was mostly vacant but briefly hosted exhibitions. In 2017 the foundation proposed demolition. The city rejected the application to create extra space for Villa Heckmann.

So here you stand before Villa Ingenohl. You see more than just bricks and mortar. You witness the passage of time. This structure is a microcosm of Bonn’s history. It reflects significant social political and architectural shifts. Enjoy the echoes of the past.
