Peeking out from amongst the trees is the Szent Donát kápolna. A testament to faith it stands quietly observing the passage of time. Let’s delve into the story of this sacred place.

The Szent Donát kápolna, or Saint Donatus Chapel, in Farkastorok, holds a special place in history. A photo from 1954 captures a moment in time. The chapel’s image is preserved for us.

The chapel has undergone changes and renewals throughout its history. In 1748 Bishop Márton Padányi Biró blessed its bell. The blessing occurred on October 11 in honor of Saint Donatus.

Written records from 1815 suggest that György Majthényi built the chapel. He was born in 1683 and died around 1755. This places the chapel’s construction within that period.

By 1815, Count Ferenc Széchényi became the patron of the chapel. He was the father of István Széchenyi. This indicates a shift in ownership or patronage.

The chapel received a new bell in 1928 to replace one taken during World War I. Like the original, it was dedicated to Saint Donatus.

In 1950, the chapel underwent renovations thanks to the contributions of devoted believers. Barna Ákosfy restored the altarpiece. However, tragedy struck on August 9, 1984, when the chapel was robbed. The altar’s baroque statues of Saint Donatus and Saint Cajetan disappeared along with two cherubs.

A complete renovation took place in 2014. The chapel received a new wooden shingle roof. This preserved its historic character for future generations.

Though the information is sparse it paints a picture of resilience and devotion. The Szent Donát kápolna stands as a symbol of faith. It is a testament to the community that has cherished it through the centuries.
