Haven’t you heard? The Corvinus Egyetem Gellért Campus is Hungary’s most sustainable educational building. Since its opening in February 2024, this Buda side campus has been welcoming students to a future-oriented learning environment. Let me tell you more about it.
Corvinus Egyetem Gellért Campus can accommodate around 680 students. The campus boasts a massive lecture hall for 300 people. Multifunctional spaces support education and research. There are also sports centers and a one-hectare park. A four-story dormitory provides affordable living for 180 students. It even includes apartments for professors.
The Data Experience Lab supports data analysis. The Media Studio fosters storytelling skills. The Makerspace hones design skills. The sports center includes outdoor and indoor team sports fields. There is a fitness room, exercise studios and a climbing wall.
Sustainability was a key focus. The Corvinus Egyetem Gellért Campus sources energy from solar panels and geothermal heat pumps. During development 82% of demolition and construction waste was recycled.
The Corvinus Egyetem Gellért Campus features intriguing elements. A Hungarian lamp installation in the entrance hall is inspired by exchange rate charts. A retro network switch cabinet from the 70s is integrated into the DataSpace. A green roof connects the two buildings. “Imperfect Cubes” by sculptor Attila Csörgő is a modern Hungarian sculpture installation.
The Maecenas Universitatis Corvini Foundation acquired the building complex in 2019. The government supported its renovation. Three-quarters of the investment came from state and EU funds. The rest came from the Foundation. More than 3,000 people worked on the renovation of the Corvinus Egyetem Gellért Campus.
The building has memorable aesthetic details. The “crown” ornament defines the upper level of the higher tower. The translucent glass concrete counter is made of Hungarian patented Litracon. The acoustic wall coverings are special. The biodiverse park has low irrigation requirements. Only a quarter of the area has paved surfaces. The car park accommodates a minimum number of cars. However, it stores up to 170 bicycles.
Lajos Szabó Acting Rector of the University calls the Corvinus Egyetem Gellért Campus a symbol of the future. He says it is home to innovation inspiration interaction and integration.
The Corvinus Egyetem Gellért Campus operates according to LEED Gold sustainability certification criteria. It is proposed for AA+ energy efficiency certification. The building minimizes light pollution.
The J tower houses educational spaces. The K tower contains dormitory rooms. Each floor has large common areas. Students live in 2-3 person units with private bathrooms.
The Data Room preserves a historical mechanical control panel. It links the past and present. The uppermost floor of the K tower is a unique crown level. It houses a Rooftop Café and professor apartments.
The university preserved the old pool structure as a memento. It repurposed it to host a large bouldering wall. The designers aimed for the building to meet LEED Gold certification requirements.
The building supports sustainability goals in numerous ways. The existing structural framework minimized the carbon footprint. Priority was given to bicycles over car traffic. Waste management and water usage minimization were focal points.
The main entrance is located at 9 Mányoki Road. The building is accessible without barriers. Adjustable external shading systems equip all exterior facades. They are controlled by the central building management system. Each room has a control panel for regulating energy systems. When a window opens heating and the fan turn off automatically.
