The church plays a vital role in San Francisco. It addresses social issues. It promotes inclusivity. The First Apostolic Faith Church welcomes everyone. The church values diversity. It commits to spreading the Good News.
Its history is rooted in the Day of Pentecost. On that day, the Holy Ghost descended upon 120 believers in Jerusalem. Joseph Morsell Turpin conceived the idea of this church. He believed wholly in the message preached by the Apostles. God led him to salvation. He filled him with the Holy Ghost.
Turpin’s faith sustained him. In 1912, he left King’s Apostle. He opened a small mission in his home. His close friends Samuel Watson and George Molton supported him. In 1916, John W. Pitcher, a Pentecostal preacher, ordained Molton, Watson, and Turpin. Many people found salvation here.
Due to rapid growth, Turpin’s followers moved to a larger mission. It was located at Biddle Street and Myrtle Avenue. Turpin sought a closer walk with the Lord.
In 1916, he learned about the Oneness of God. He heard about Water Baptism in Jesus Name. He and his wife Ruth traveled to Philadelphia. They wanted to hear Henry Prentiss. Prentiss was pastor of the Apostolic Faith Assembly. He had been to the Azusa Street Revival. He received the baptism of the Holy Ghost there.
Mother Ruth Turpin got baptized in Jesus’ name. Soon after her husband was baptized. Prentiss preached the revelation of Jesus Name at the mission. Some congregation members rejected the message. The doors were padlocked. They denied access to continue the revival.
Without a place, Prentiss held services at Turpin’s home. It was located at 311 North Gilmor Street. A seminal moment occurred during Bible Study. Minister Turpin met his neighbors, the Dyson family. The mission held a baptismal service. Young Alethia Dyson was the first person baptized in Jesus’ name. Joseph Morsell Turpin performed the baptism.
