“It is a place where faith meets compassion” – these are the first words that came to mind when I saw the Holy Nazarene Rescue Mission for the first time. Standing tall on South Throop Street in Chicago, the Mission isn’t just a building; it’s a beacon of hope for those who are struggling.

The Holy Nazarene Rescue Mission is a Christian church dedicated to helping the less fortunate in the Chicago area. It was established in 1908 by Mother Mattie L. Thornton Branch, a preacher who traveled to Chicago from New York City with a group of women missionaries. Their goal was to bring the Gospel to Chicago’s poor and neglected.

They began their ministry in a tent on the corner of Wabash and 26th street. The women preached, prayed, and sang, not only sharing their faith but also providing practical support to those in need. The Mission faced challenges; they were even arrested and thrown into jail. Despite these hardships, they persisted, and their work grew steadily.

The original Holy Nazarene Tabernacle, as it was first known, moved from tent to a small mission on 26th Street. It continued to grow. The Mission found its current location on South Throop Street in the middle of the 20th century when Mother Ella Hunter purchased the building. It’s a place where services are still held, the Gospel is preached, and a warm meal is guaranteed to those in need.

But the Holy Nazarene Rescue Mission is not just about religion. It’s a place where compassion reigns supreme. The Mission offers shelter, food, counseling, and even job training programs for those who need a hand up and a helping heart.

The Mission’s legacy is a powerful tribute to its founder, Mother Mattie L. Thornton Branch. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith, compassion, and the unyielding commitment to serving those who are most vulnerable. The Holy Nazarene Rescue Mission is a reminder that hope can be found in the most unexpected places. It is a place where individuals find a haven, and where the bonds of community thrive.
